SAMPLES
Sample Network Post: You know, none of this really adds up. If we really are clones, then why do we all have memories of highly distinct worlds? I know they say it's just a technical kink...a glitch, gremlins, whatever - but I don't buy it...[Not that Newt bought into the whole "genetic ancestral memory" schtick. But...If (and that was a really big "if") these memories came from their past original lives, then why did they all remember the world differently? The guys up top said they were clones afterall, so obviously they'd have to have gotten the genetic material that would be used for cloning for somewhere - and the working assumption Newt had was that it came from the Earth they were currently on. And he didn't see any giant monsters about.]

Not that I'm against this whole "saving the Earth" business.
[There's the sound of a chair squeaking as Newt leans back] Yep, not to brag or anything, but I totally saved the Earth before. Single-handed, even... Well, the Earth I remember at least. Maybe it's like riding a bike?

Sample Prose Post:
Newt sat on the beach, admiring the sunset. The reflected pinks, purples and oranges danced on the ocean waves. Newt had to give the guys in charge some credit, they picked an awesome place for their research station. Back home, you couldn't even admire the ocean for fear that a kaiju would rise up out of the water.

Well, not really "back home", exactly. More like the memories in Newt's head. Memories that his advisor said weren't real.

He looked at his arms. They were dusted with a fine coating of sand, but otherwise bare. Not at all how he recalls they looked yesterday. He traced an outline of a horrible squid beast - "Yamarashi. Cat 3. Two thousand five hundred tons of awesome," he whispered. There were more monsters on his arms too - Hammerjaw, Meathead, Scissure. All of them the most advanced, awe-inspiring, terrifying creatures to ever walk the face of the Earth.

All of them only lived inside Newt's head. Which he just couldn't believe.

PERSONALITY

- How does your character view the world? Do they find it pleasant or do they wish there was something else out there?

Newt's world view can be summed up as: "Yeah the world is full of giant monsters that will rise up out of the oceans and most likely kill everyone, but they're really really cool monsters. Think of all the things we can learn from them!" The world is dangerous and deadly, but also full of endless possibilities for discovery.

- Describe a situation in which your character said or did the wrong thing. Was s/he willing to admit this error? Was there a confession, or did s/he deny, deny, deny?

Newt's quite familiar with "foot-in-mouth syndrome", especially when it's about his kaiju obsession. He attempts to spin these errors to make it look like what he really meant to say was something else entirely. In the movie, this happens when he calls Yamarashi, the Category 3 Kaiju that leveled Los Angeles "2,5000 tons of awesome". When given the "what the hell did you just say?" look, he responds with the brilliant line of "I meant awful. Or awesome in the old sense of the word. Awe-inspiring."

- Describe how your character would thank another. Does s/he jump on the opportunity?

The most heartfelt thanks anyone would get out of Newt is a mention in the Acknowledgements section of his scientific papers (currently limited to Mom and Dad, and funding sources).

- Describe an important task that your character was responsible for. Did they abandon the task or stick with it to completion?

After Drifting with the first kaiju brain, Newt was tasked with finding another kaiju brain to Drift with. To do this, he need to not only go to the Bone Slums of Hong Kong to deal with scummy black market dealers, but he also almost got eaten by an angry kaiju. After all that he had to return to the Bone Slums to get his brain. The fate of the world depended on it!

- Describe a situation in which your character and a figure of authority did not see things eye-to-eye. Was your character willing to compromise or did s/he stand his or her ground?
+
- Describe a situation where your character deliberately hurt someone or destroyed property that does not belong to them. What was their justification? Are they stricken by remorse?

Newton presented his hypothesis that all kaiju are cloned, and expressed a desire to initiate a Drift (or neural connection) with a fragment of a kaiju brain to test this proposition. Both Marshal Pentecost and Ranger Henson agreed that the neural load would be way too much for a human brain to handle. Newt was all "whateva, whateva I do want I want!" and jury rigged a device that would allow him to Drift with said brain fragment.

To do this he need to "borrow" some equipment that was safely locked inside a storage locker. He had to cut the locks to get the items; he justified this action by saying (1) no one would notice anyway and (2) if the Drift was successful, then no-one would care when it was found out.

- Describe the five foods that mainly comprise your character's diet.

Newt's food pyramid consists of - (1) Carbohydrates: a solid base of leftovers found in the lab fridge (hopefully free of any mold or spores), (2) Veggies: Hermann's baby carrots (consumed without asking, of course), (3) Fruits: those little fruit jellos found in the Shatterdome's cafeteria (gathered en masse and stockpiled in aforementioned lab fridge), (3) Meats/Proteins: stinky tofu (an acquired taste that drives Hermann crazy, (4) Alcohol, (5) Caffeine (Sources include: coffee, soda, 5 hour energy, and good old fashioned hydrocarbon synthesis)

- Describe your character's religious beliefs.

Contrary to what some people think, Newt's not a card carrying member of the Kaiju Worshipers' Kult. He's a bona-fide atheist.

- Describe a situation in which your character was forced to make a complicated decision. Did s/he make the decision before s/he knew all of the facts or did s/he bide his or her time until s/he was absolutely sure?

Coming back to our well-loved "let's mind-meld with a horrible extradimensional beast" example we see that Newt's a leap before you look, let the chips fall where they may kind of guy. This recklessness is mostly due to arrogance (only he is badass enough to do this crazy thing!) and occurs when he feels he needs to take the next "logical" step to prove his hypothesis.

- Has your character ever made a decision that benefited them for the moment but had severe or even dangerous repercussions in the long run? If not, has your character ever made a decision that would benefit them in the long run but brought them anguish or even misery in the interim?
+
- Describe a situation in which the character accomplished something very difficult or with the odds stacked against them. What was their initial reaction? Were they prone to bragging or did they humbly and quietly enjoy their success?

Drifting is not without risk - including brain damage, seizures, cerebral/ocular hemorrhaging, and death. The probabilities of these side effects occurring skyrocket when the thing you're drifting with is an inhuman monster. But Newt's a betting man, especially when being the first ever to drift with a kaiju is on the table.

After the first time he drifted with the Kaiju brain, and made it back with little harm done the very first thing he says is "I was right". It's fairly safe to say that Newt is a Braggy McBraggerson in other aspects of life as well.
